III+ is not an official NIJ 0101.06 level — but it is critical for protection against modern rifles. Understand the technical and operational difference from IV.
The so-called Level III+ is a manufacturer classification widely adopted across Latin America and Europe. It fills a real operational gap between Level III (7.62x51 NATO FMJ) and IV (.30-06 M2AP armor-piercing) of NIJ 0101.06.
NIJ does not formally recognize III+ — each manufacturer defines its own threat package. Therefore, when specifying III+, you must demand the exact list of munitions tested, with a traceable ballistic report.
What III+ typically protects against
III+ plates from serious manufacturers stop the most frequent threats in modern urban theater:
• 7.62x39 API BZ (AK armor-piercing round — common in conflicts and international organized crime);
• 5.56x45 M855 / SS109 (NATO standard steel-core round, used in M4/M16/AR-15);
• 7.62x51 M80 Ball (NATO standard in MAG, FN FAL, HK G3 rifles);
• 5.56x45 M193 (high-velocity civilian and military round).
In short: III+ is the technical answer to the rifles actually encountered in real incidents in Latin America, including organized-crime seizures.
Official Level III: what changes
NIJ 0101.06 Level III only requires stopping 7.62x51 NATO M80 FMJ at 847 m/s. Many III-certified plates FAIL against 5.56 M855 and 7.62x39 API — because the standard does not require those tests.
So buying a 'Level III plate' without checking the full munitions list is a real operational risk. A reputable manufacturer's III+ seal closes that gap.
When Level IV is mandatory
Level IV is mandatory in operations with confirmed use of military armor-piercing ammunition (.30-06 M2AP and AP equivalents such as 7.62x51 M993, 7.62x54R B32).
IV uses thicker, denser ceramic — usually high-purity silicon carbide (SiC) or aluminum oxide (Al2O3), 22 to 30 mm thick and 3.2 to 4.1 kg per 10x12 in plate. This significantly increases combatant load and reduces mobility.
Typical scenarios that require IV: military operations in external theaters, strategic perimeter defense (power plants, refineries, federal prisons), VIP escort in high-threat environments and heavy vehicle armoring.

Monolithic UHMWPE Level III plate: 1.4 to 1.8 kg / stops 7.62x51 FMJ / fails against 5.56 M855.
Ceramic-UHMWPE III+ plate: 2.3 to 2.9 kg / stops 7.62x51, 5.56 M855, 7.62x39 API / fails against .30-06 AP.
Composite ceramic Level IV plate: 3.2 to 4.1 kg / stops .30-06 M2AP, 7.62 AP / maximum operational weight.
The weight difference between III+ and IV is significant in long-duration operations — an 8-hour patrol carrying IV wears the team down much more than the same patrol with III+.
Technical recommendation by profile
Special police units, urban intervention forces: III+ meets the realistic threat package with weight compatible with tactical mobility.
Armed forces in external theater, riot troops on strategic perimeter defense, vehicle armoring against AP: Level IV is preferable.
Executive personal security and VIP escort: III+ as standard, with IV available for specific high-threat scenarios.
Specification precautions
When tendering or purchasing III+ plates, demand: (a) ballistic report with full list of munitions tested and reference velocities; (b) current DFPC certificate; (c) traceability by lot and serial number; (d) manual with storage, transport and post-impact disposal instructions; (e) minimum 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
